E18th Street Originally, this backyard was covered in peagravel. The first step was to remove the gravel, fabric and raised perimeter containers. We dug in compost and plant beds with colorful perennials and evergreens organized around a meadow-like lawn with clover, yarrow, and low-maintenance fescues. We heard the soil breathing again along with the pollinators in the apple and plum trees and the birds nesting in the junipers. Nearby on the outdoor dining patio, a series of rolling vegetable beds created a portable farm garden. This year we will be extending the new gardens to include the driveway and front of house. |
